Boyd McCleary: British Politics in Turmoil and what this means for Europe

Boyd will look back briefly at 14 years of Conservative Party government and then analyse the results of the 2024 Election, which gave Labour a landslide victory, bringing Sir Keir Starmer to power as Prime Minister with a mandate for change. Since then things have gone badly wrong and Labour’s popularity has fallen massively, while support for Reform UK has increased. Starmer’s position has been under threat. So far he has survived, but can he continue if forthcoming local elections see major losses for the party? Labour has brought Britain closer to Europe, but is there any prospect of Brexit being reversed?

Boyd McCleary was born and educated in Belfast. He studied German at Queen’s University Belfast. After a short period in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, he spent 40 years in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, at home and abroad. He served in Germany, Korea, Turkey, Canada and the British Virgin Islands. Since retiring Boyd has worked as a consultant on international business and a part-time judge. He is also a trustee of two conservation charities and a school governor. Boyd lives in Hampshire.
