Beyond the Numbers: Helga’s Kindertransport Journey

75; 6165; 3 1/4 inches x 4 11/16 inches; 1939; 10,000; 1,500,000; 6,000,000.
These numbers all have specific meanings when it comes to a piece of cardboard that recently made its way into Professor Ostoyich’s hands. Starting with the piece of cardboard, Ostoyich will slowly piece together the story of the little girl who wore it around her neck as she journeyed from Vienna to London on a Kindertransport.

Kevin Ostoyich (Ph.D. Harvard University) is professor of history at Valparaiso University. He is an associate fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg (global dis:connect) at LMU and recently served as a guest professor at the
Institut für Bayerische Geschichte. Ostoyich serves as the historian for the Florence and Laurence Spungen Family Foundation. He is a board member of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center, the Sino-Judaic Institute, and the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. Ostoyich is a non-resident fellow of the American-German Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
He has previously served as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies at the LMU and a senior fellow at the German Historical Institute Pacific Regional Office/University of California, Berkeley. Ostoyich recently coedited
The History of the Shanghai Jews: New Pathways of Research (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022). He interviews Holocaust survivors, creates historical theatre plays about Shanghai Jewish refugees with students, and lectures on the Holocaust around the world.
